CANZONI DA FRONTIERA

Gli ART of FLYing, dal New Mexico, sono uno dei segreti meglio custoditi della canzone americana "classica" del nuovo secolo. Di fatto un trio arricchito da diversi ospiti (trombone, vibrafono, violincello e altro per ricreare quel che serve, dalle orchestrazioni essenziali alle fughe tex-mex), sono in giro da una dozzina d'anni per reconvertire al formato canzone la precedente esperienza nei WiteFronts, band di improvvista radicale che si muoveva addirittura negli anni '80. Il nuovo disco è quasi barocco per i loro standard; e permette al gruppo di dedicarsi al sontuoso surf-rock orchestrale Kaliyuga, Baby, al soul-pop tutto coretti sbarazzini Kiss Kiss o al boogie stradaiolo Wake Up! Little Susie II. La voce di David Costanza ha una versatilità rara e un timbro che cela sempre un'ombra di sarcasmo, un modo molto 'inglese' di interpretare un musica visceralmente americana. Non a caso il loro forte sono sempre le ballate: BindWeed & AppleBlossom  è una carola da Natale tra i cactus; la title track (cantata da Anne Speroni) riecheggia i sortilegi witch-folk di Larkin Grimm, Love Song for Larry Yes è country-slide da commiato con una filastrocca per ritornello. SONGS FROM THE BORDER

The Art of Flying, from New Mexico, are one of the best kept secrets of American song "classic" of the new century. In fact a trio enriched by several reviews (trombone, vibraphone, cello and more to recreate what you need, from orchestrations essential to Tex-Mex joints), have been around for a dozen years for the song format reconvertire previous experience in the WhiteFronts, a radical improvisation band playing  in the 80s. The new album is almost baroque by their standards, and allows the group to engage in lavish surf-rock orchestral Kaliyuga, Baby, soul-pop choruses all saucy Kiss Kiss or boogie Stradaioli Wake Up! Little Susie II. The voice of David Costanza has a rare versatility and a tone of sarcasm that always hides a shadow, a very 'English' way to play a  viscerally American music. Not by chance, they are always strong ballads: BindWeed & AppleBlossom is a Christmas carol from among the cactus, the title track (sung by Anne Speroni) echoes the witch-magic folk of Larkin Grimm.
